Working in a sketchbook recently has brought a multitude of questions about - is sketchbook work as valid as actual paintings? To me they most certainly are in some ways they are even more important as they are the springboard to try out ideas, to be playful and experimental, be a beautiful record of your thinking processes and something to take reference from in the future. Using a sketchbook to invoke a freedom of expression really is important to me not only as an outlet for my desire to create but as a wellbeing tool to distract from the daily things that need to be done.
Wondering if a sketchbook is valid is really something that weighs heavy on my mind, but do we really need this validification? Probably not. We really need to remember its about the enjoyment of the journey that matters and if it is in a sketchbook well thats ok too, whatever marks we make they are part of our development as an artist, although someone tell myself that ! Personally I love to have a sketchbook open in the house and every time I pass I look at it and add a bit more or less and its almost a daily ritual that I cannot do without. I would love to hear your views on sketchbooks and how you use them, do you add text or finish the pages completely?
Here are a few of my works recently, some are sketchbook and some are finished pieces.
