Embracing a slow start to the New Year

As the calendar turns over and we step into a new year, the pressure can feel overwhelming. We often rush to set ambitious goals and tackle numerous resolutions all at once. But taking a step back to breathe can be one of the most valuable choices we make. Embracing a slower start allows for reflection, rejuvenation, and a clearer understanding of what truly matters in our lives.

The Importance of Reflection

Reflecting on past work helps us celebrate our successes and learn from the challenges we faced. For instance, take a moment to consider what took place in the previous year: Did you complete something that brought you joy? Did you overcome difficult moments, like balancing work, art and family commitments? Understanding these experiences sets a strong foundation for growth in the coming year.

Taking time to make decisions and to resolve your art in a reflective way, can give a more rounded view on your whole practice rather than steaming away with your head down.

Setting Intentions, Not Resolutions

Every year, we become entangled in the pursuit of new year's resolutions—often resulting in disappointment. Instead of overwhelming ourselves with a list of goals, we can benefit from focusing on intentions.

Intentions serve as guiding principles that reflect how we want to live rather than rigid targets. For example, instead of aiming to sell or promote your art, consider asking yourself:

  • How do I want to feel about my art this year?

  • What small daily habits can support me to achieve and feel accomplished? Which will then build on your skills and knowledge which will in turn help to get recognition for your art.

I find not focussing on the greater picture but on enjoying what I do which ultimately shows in the work you produce. I hope you have gained some insight by reading this and that your New Year is filled with joy and creativity!
